The Hambidge Center For Creative Arts And Sciences. Every year, for 19 years now, Hambidge has had an auction to raise money for its wonderful artists’ mountain retreat.
This year, the Goat Farm Arts Center in Atlanta will be hosting the auction on May 31st. I have been asked to donate two pieces, one you see above. It is a drawing on Reeves paper, done with pencil. Reeves paper is so soft and special, it is an artist’s secret for making the pencils and erasers glide over the page. Darks are darker, and it is easy to erase. Lovely.
Some of you bloggers are familiar with my dislike of titles, but this one I just had to name “Water on Paper.” I think it is appropriate.
If you are in the Atlanta area May 31st, there is not a more interesting event to attend. For more information, click here.
What weight is the Reeves? I have almost a ream of Reeves Heavy Weight left over from Printmaking at Haystack. It is beautiful for blk & Wht media, I am not as happy with how it takes color….watercolor or wet pencils. I think it may need a mixed media white, (pastel, oil crayon, or even acrylic white?) added for sparkle?

I am not sure of the weight of the paper, Pat. (BTW, thank you so much for commenting here. It may encourage other visual artists to do so!) It is light enough though, to have a light wrinkle in it, so that I have to iron it! The wrinkle is not in the image part, however! I read that Reeves paper is 100 per cent cotton. So ironing would work just fine!
As far as the color additions with water, such as paint, I am not sure. Its primary purpose is for printmaking. I imagine colored pencils would have the same effect as regular pencil. Anyway, lucky you for having so much!

Hey Jenny! I am glad you found it! Yes, it is different than the other two. And since you were not the only one to miss this one, I have decided to number my posts again! We would love to have you come this way. The fact that your son was near Hambidge (Rabun Gap) is incredible to me!

It has been moved! My actual solo show in NYC is April of 2016. So maybe you will be able to come! A good time slot. Or did you mean Hambidge’s auction? Sorry. Yes, that one is a good one. Sorry you can’t make it, but do totally understand.

Hollis there is this tangible feeling/sense of drama woven into this piece. I find myself staring at this piece from all angles: from the middle out to the edges, I’ve been perusing the edges and exploring from there back toward the middle. Very interesting piece. I’d be interested in knowing what kind of season you found yourself in when this piece emerged.

Thank you Eli! I had not heard from you in a while. I draw like this when I draw. I think I am best at drawing and painting. But a lot of the success of this drawing is in the Reeves paper. Buy some! And watch your pencil drawings really take off. I know you like color though and I don’t know how it handles color. Pat Sharp commented above on that! Good to hear from you!

Hollis I’ll have to go to the art supply shop and check out Reeves paper. You’re quite right, I love color. But there is a beauty to pencil sketching that I’m drawn too as well. Loving your new posts!
